A lot of things in life are beyond our control, but it’s quite possible to have greater control over our actions and how we respond to the situations we find ourselves in. To do this, we need to cultivate awareness of how the mind works and the ability to maintain focus. And nothing cultivates awareness better than meditation does. What happens to your body when you meditate?
Meditation teaches us that contentedness and presence are the true keys to happiness (even if society tries to tell us that the latest gadget is the key – it’s not). Rather, the main source of our happiness comes from within.
When we practice meditation, our mind learns how to access the wealth of qualities that already exist within us.

An eight-week study at the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness seemed to indicate that after just two months of daily mindfulness – a half hour per day – not only had participants’ brains begun to change, but they already “felt more capable of acting with awareness, observing, and remaining nonjudgmental.” meditation is good for body and soul. Researchers believe that practicing meditation helps us be able to relax our bodies at bedtime, allowing us to fall asleep faster.

Meditation is a useful tool that helps relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Meditation is not only associated with feeling less stressed, but it actually lowers stress hormones in the body. The hormone cortisol is released in the body during times of stress. When you’re used to living with a high level of stress, high levels of cortisone in your body go to work and cause health problems like depression, heart disease, headaches, and weight gain.
6. Better Performance
Staying in the present moment won’t just make you feel better, it could actually help you perform better. Soldiers in the Marine Corps have benefited from meditation as well. Those who practice daily mindfulness have improved attentions spans and are more resilient to stress. Studies have shown that students who meditate regularly actually score better on tests and have better reading comprehension skills that those who do not meditate.
